Richmond house, TW10

The client brief was to create a more efficient and open rear part of the ground floor of the 3-storey Victorian terraced house. In addition the house was to be refurbished and new elements of fitted furniture to be added.
The existing ground floor at the rear of the house comprised a dark kitchen, a small & dark utility room addition blocking views and access to the garden and a very dated conservatory.

The utility addition and conservatory were proposed to be removed. We developed a design with the clients to replace the conservatory with a modern garden room, and to extend the kitchen adjacent to the garden room. Both of these additions were combined under one new lean-to and zinc clad roof, with the aim to tidy up the rear elevation. Large areas of glazing with Crittal style (steel frame) fenestration were incorporated into the elevations and roofs. Internally these additions were meant to provide much improved connections to the garden and to increase daylight levels to the dining and kitchen areas – which they do very well!
Planning consent for the proposed additions to the property (within a conservation area) was received in April 2020. Works commenced shortly after and it was great to see the design come to life, creating great view connections into the garden with much improved internal flows.
A very smart and open kitchen was installed further helping to declutter the rear of the house.
In addition to these more substantial extension works with complete ground ‘floor’ replacement, the house was refurbished throughout incl. addition of a new utility room, partial replacement of damaged plaster coving with matching traditional plaster coving, replacement of floor finished and decoration.
Studio VK also designed, built and fitted a large shelving unit to either side of the chimney breast in the dining room, and a solid Oak TV unit to the front room – concealing the TV when not in use.
